My drawings are largely made up of charcoal and pastel plein air sketches. I particularly like to work with charcoal and pastel outdoors in the winter months, unlike watercolours which cannot dry outside in cold and damp weather conditions.

In the winter of 2010 I started experimenting working with charcoal in my studio, using the plein air studies as reference. When I work in the studio the work takes on a very different sense. Working outside its about actively engaging with what is in front of me, very little time to think, just do. When I return to the studio the work becomes more contemplative in nature, poetical in a sense. They speak what I cannot say in words.
