The inspirational source for all my oil paintings are my plein air sketches in pastel or watercolour, I firmly believe that if you are interested in nature then you must draw directly on location, to actively engage with the landscape. Their is no other way to truly get the sense of a place.

Working back in the studio, and the life sketches pinned on the wall, the oil works take on a different meaning. These paintings are not meant to be replicas of plein air sketches. I am looking now with an internalised distance. Memory, time and a sense of place take on their own meaning, poetical distillations emerge, this is more about the process of painting. I am always surprised where the paint leads me.
